"In 2008, JH Phrydas wrote a story about how bodies talk without words. He wanted the story to not just describe the silent ritual of nonverbal communication but to perform it. The interaction would be visceral - the exchange melancholic, yet full of lust. He wanted words to retain the unsayable: the subtle movements of a body in heat. In the years since, Phrydas kept rewriting this story, using different techniques, different syntaxes and forms, in hopes that he would find a successful method of gestural writing. Imperial Physique is a collection of these attempts. They explore the way our bodies hover between animal and human, civil and wild. The bleakness - and underlying verve - of imagining Western empires in decline serve as a backdrop for a lone figure searching city streets, decaying architecture, and sand dunes for some type of physical connection. What arises is the loss of - and longing for - touch at the edges of imperialism, historical violence, and personal shame"--

Swedish artist JH Engström is an inveterate bookmaker. The source for his photographs is nevertheless strongly autobiographical, as well as vividly metaphorical; a reemphasis of the artist’s belief in photography’s potential as visual poetry. The sequencing is highly charged with contrasts: black-and-white images mix with color; the gentle beauty of coastal rocks clashes with a flash-lit image of the bright, blood-red placentas from the birth of his twins. The book leaves it to the viewer to map his or her own network of meaning from image to image, page to page. Tout Va Bien is designed and produced by Patric Leo. JH Engström was awarded the Leica Oskar Barnack Award 2015 for this body of work. - See more at: http://aperture.org/shop/tout-va-bien-book#sthash.

The Frame is JH Engström´s extended self-portrait, a search towards and an escape from the idea of father, a meditation on the meaning of the male gender. In times when society is starting to do a much needed and urgent re-examination of the very notions of gender, this is Engström´s personal, generous sometimes violent and desperate but always heartfelt contribution to this decisive discussion. In times when society is starting to do a much needed and urgent re-examination of the very notions of gender, this is Engström´s personal, generous sometimes violent and desperate but always heartfelt contribution to this decisive discussion. "Since I started photographing 30 years ago I have photographed men. During all these years I have also repeatedly photographed transgender persons. Another recurring motif during these 30 years are self-portraits. My own thousands of contact sheets show me a lifelong, both conscious and subconscious, search linked to identity and the constant changeability and transience connected to the human condition. In addition to these images, the book starts and ends with photographs of moraine rocks. These rocks were pushed forward by the ice sheet. When the ice melted 10.000 years ago they stopped where they are now to be found. The expanded self-portrait and the mirroring in others is a way to approach the historical renegotiation that is now taking place regarding the idea of the male."

For more than 20 years, Swedish photographer JH Engström (born 1969) has spent time living and working in Paris, a city that, like New York, has a long photographic pedigree; countless photographers have been inspired by its iconic architecture and busy streets. This book, however, is hardly a catalog of classic Parisian scenes, offering instead a raw yet lyrical portrayal of the artist's misadventures, loves and random encounters in its streets, bars and artist lofts - an entirely personal Paris. Drawing more from Nan Goldin and Anders Peters than Atget or Henri Cartier-Bresson, Engström brings us on a gritty, no-holds-barred guided tour of life in his adopted city. The book brings together more than 250 color and black-and-white photographs - self-portraits, nudes, portraits of lovers, friends, strangers and the occasional street scene - all shot between 1991 and 2012, tracing a critical time during the development of the artist's own voice and vision.
